The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has celebrated the distinguished and unblemished careers of Alhaji Abdulganiyu Atere, outgone Director of Information Services in the state Ministry of Communications, and Hajia Muibat Adedayo Adewuyi, who retired as Director of Programmes of Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara). In a statement released by the Council’s Chairman, Abdullateef 'Lanre Ahmed, and Secretary, Mahmood Olayinka Alaya, on Monday, the NUJ hailed the duo of Atere and Adewuyi for their exemplary services and dedication, describing them as pillars of journalism and broadcasting in Kwara State.  The statement commended Alhaji Atere, a veteran journalist, and Hajia Adewuyi, an ace broadcaster, for their long-standing commitment to professionalism, having served in various roles with diligence, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the public good. Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has appointed the much sought-after management consultant retired Colonel Abdulwahab Ademola Lawal Ph.D as the chairman of the Kwara State Education Trust Fund (ETF). A people-person known for his integrity and discipline, Colonel Lawal comes highly recommended for the task of mobilising human and material resources for public education in Kwara State. Col. Lawal served in the Nigerian Army Infantry for 22 years and retired in 1995. He served in many capacities, both on staff and command. He also served in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in Iran-Iraq military Observer Group in 1988-99 and ECOMOG 1992-1994. • Says building a gross act of impunity, encroachment into public land, and setbacks Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KW-GIS) has said it is removing the Crystal corner shops because new findings show clearly that they grossly violate government’s land use approval issued to the owner on March 22, 2013.  The approval was for the purpose of a commercial "car park only,” KW-GIS said in a statement on Sunday.  KWGIS also said the illegal building conspicuously creates obstacles for urban planning, road expansion and environmental protection, key features of the urban renewal programme of the government.  “It is trite to say that a land allotted for the purpose of a car park cannot and should not become corner shops which it became overnight," it said. "Importantly, the land was originally designed as a green area (a garden) where civil servants, pensioners, and members of the public relaxed at the new state secretariat complex." The agency said t

 In a bid to enforce environmental health laws and prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed off five houses on Talubi Street, Eruda area in Ilorin, for non-compliance with environmental regulations. The Agency's Acting General Manager, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho Adeola, led the enforcement team and explained that the action was necessitated by the occupants persistent disregard for environmental health laws. "Every house must have toilet facilities to prevent open defecation, which poses serious health risks to the general public," she emphasized. According to Hajia Folorunsho, the offenders had previously received an abatement notice and signed a letter of undertaking to address the nuisance but failed to comply. The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) has organized a maiden workshop to sensitize Tricycle operators in the state, in a bid to improve safety of lives and properties.  The program which is aimed at enlightening and educating the Operators is geared towards righting the wrong and educating the Operators on traffic regulations and riding techniques to avoid crashes on the highways. In view of the potential risks posed by heavy rainfall and the planned release of water from Lagdo Dam, the Kwara State Government hereby urges residents to take necessary precautions to protect lives and property, to avoid mishaps.  This was contained in a statement issued today, by the State Commissioner for Communications, Hon. According to the statement; "the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued warnings, for residents in flood prone areas in particular, to prepare for urban flooding in major cities, due to the expected heavy downpours. • says affected spots not on Idiagbon flyover Kwara State Ministry of Water Resources has said some of its pipes that crisscross the University of Ilorin Road around the Tunde Idiagbon Bridge have rusted and would be replaced in the coming days. In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry said the pipes are found to be leaking water to the surface of the road, partially affecting a small portion of the new road. “Our engineers are working with the Ministry of Works and Transport to address the issue. In the interim, water supply will be disconnected in the axis. We regret the inconveniences to our customers,” the statement said.  "The spots affected are not anywhere close to the Flyover."
