The Kwara State Government has stressed the importance of the domestication of National Gender Policy in Education (NGPE), with the aim of strengthening female enrolment and retention strategies of adolescent girls, in Kwara public schools, among other pertinent factors.

The Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development and Chairman, State Project Steering Committee of the Project, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, stated this during the week at the inauguration ceremony of Committee on Domestication of National Gender Policy in Education and workshop for members, held at AGILE office, House 12, GRA Ilorin, the state capital.

At the workshop organised by Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, in collaboration with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, the Commissioner stressed further that the domestication of the policy is to suit the distinct peculiarities of Kwara State.

The sensitisation and inauguration workshop was done in partnership with the implementing partner of the system strengthening aspect of the Project,  Development Options Consulting Limited.

According to the commissioner, "It is an effort to extract and adapt the National Policy on gender in education, to suit the norms and cultural beliefs of the state. It is indeed one of the greatest achievements of Kwara AGILE project.

"The strength of the policy is to address educational challenges across all strata, to cater for gender equality and inclusive education. It intends to mitigate the issue of out-of-school girls through literacy, numeracy and vocational centres," he added.

Dr. Olohungbebe commended the gender parity policy of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and his supportive policies for the female gender in the State. 

He called on stakeholders to support the adoption of the policy, adding their cooperation is vital to the success of drafting and reviewing the Kwara State policy on gender in education.

Earlier, the Project Coordinator, Kwara AGILE, Mr Adeshina Salami, noted that gender policy has to do with principles and guidelines aimed at promoting gender equality, address gender-based inequalities and discrimination within the society.

In his remarks, the Deputy Project Coordinator and Officer in charge of System Strengthening sub-component, Mr. Lawal Hamzat, urged committee members to support the project and bring in their expertise in domesticating the policy in Kwara State.

Also, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Development Options Consulting Ltd., Mr. Olatunji Awoleye, commended the support of the AGILE team as well as the exceptional support of the Commissioner with a promise that, his team would discharge their duties effectively, to achieve the Project Development Objectives (PDOs) of AGILE.

The newly inaugurated committee is chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs. Rebecca Bake Olanrewaju and the Secretary is the Technical Assistant on the System Strengthening sub-component, Mr. Olatunji Awoleye.

Members of the Committee were drawn from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and Civil Society Organisations, whose mandates are related to gender and education.

Kwara TESCOM Opens Application Portal for Teaching Jobs

Kwara Govt Okays Conditional Re-opening of Forest for Sawmilers

The Kwara State Government has officially announced the re-opening of forests in the State for sawmilling and forestry related activities with conditions aimed at preserving the forests as crucial natural resources for generations to come.  The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, as part of the government's position while interacting with officials and key-stakeholders of saw millers, chainsaw operators and plank sellers in the State today.
