KWSG ASSURES IFELAGBA COMMUNITY OF SWIFT ACTION ON OIL SPILLAGE

…As it issues a directive on temporary closure of Rainoil Filling Station located along Lare-Gada, Sobi Road, Ilorin.

The Kwara State Government has assured residents of Ifelagba community in Sobi, Alagbado, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State that swift and decisive action will be taken on their complaint about the discovery of oil spillage in four wells and one borehole within the area.

The Commissioner for Business, Innovation and Technology, Hon. Damilola Yusuf Adelodun, together with the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Buge, who led officials from both Ministries, on an urgent inspection to the community yesterday, gave this assurance to residents in the community.
Hon. Damilola emphasized that the state government will undertake comprehensive geological and environmental assessments to verify the presence and quantity of the spillage and evaluate the implications for public health, safety and potential hazard for future exploration.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of collaboration with the community and pledged to engage relevant federal agencies for technical assessments and further discussions on how best to manage and develop the area responsibly.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Buge, who was represented by the Head of Department, Pollution Control, Alabelewe Saadudeen, promised to carry out necessary investigations to detect the cause of the oil spillage in the community. 
Speaking earlier during the inspection, the Chairman of the community, Alhaji Ajadi AbdulAzeez, expressed his gratitude to the state government for the prompt response and welcomed the Commissioners and their teams, highlighting the alarming discovery of oil in major wells and boreholes across the community, which has led to water contamination and scarcity.

Alhaji AbdulAzeez explained that the substance discovered during recent water retrieval efforts had the distinct appearance and odor of petroleum, raising significant concerns about environmental safety.

The Magaji of Ifelagba, Alhaji Mohammed Amori Ajape, appreciated the timely intervention of the state government, under the leadership of the Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and thanked both Commissioners for the visit, while appealing for immediate support, especially, the provision of clean and potable water for the affected residents.

Responding, the Area Manager, Rainoil Ltd., Mr. AbdulHakeem Adeyeye, stated that the company had carried out several tests and septic surveys to determine the source and scope of the issue.

The entourage also include: Director of Commerce, Mr. Taiwo Adebisi; Deputy Director of Commerce, Alhaji Sani Ibrahim; Head of Petroleum Products Monitoring Unit, AbdulRazaq Jimoh; Head of Pollution Control, Ministry of Environment, Alabelewe Saadudeen; Principal Scientific Officer, Samuel Oluwadare; Scientific Officer, Elemosho AbdulAzeez; Environmental Officer, Ayinde Habibat; and other relevant officials.

Kwara Govt Okays Conditional Re-opening of Forest for Sawmilers

The Kwara State Government has officially announced the re-opening of forests in the State for sawmilling and forestry related activities with conditions aimed at preserving the forests as crucial natural resources for generations to come.  The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, as part of the government's position while interacting with officials and key-stakeholders of saw millers, chainsaw operators and plank sellers in the State today.
