KWARA LEADS GREEN REVOLUTION WITH BIO-FERTILIZER, BACKYARD FARMING FOR WOMEN, YOUTHS

The Kwara State Government is on the verge of securing a strategic partnership with Contec Global Agro Limited, a leading agro-biotechnology firm, to establish a state-of-the-art bio-fertilizer manufacturing facility in the State. The move marks a significant step towards climate-smart agriculture, local input production, and inclusive economic growth.

This was made known during a working visit to Abuja by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Afees Abolore Alabi. While the preliminary agreement is still on going, the partnership is part of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s broader vision to modernize agriculture through innovation, sustainability, and private-sector collaboration.

Dr. Alabi described the deal as a game-changer for the State’s farming economy, noting that the plant will produce 100% organic agricultural solutions tailored to Kwara’s soil types. The facility will help restore degraded soil, increase crop productivity, and lower farmers’ dependence on chemical inputs. In addition, it is expected to reduce land pressure by discouraging shift cultivation, while also creating jobs, stimulating agri-business opportunities, and expanding export potentials for Kwara-grown produce.

As part of the implementation strategy, the Kwara State Government will engage agronomists and technical officers from Contec Global to train Kwara Agricultural Development Programme (KWADP) extension workers across the State. The training sessions will focus on good agricultural practices and effective use of organic inputs for improved yields. Demonstration plots will also be established to enable side-by-side comparisons with conventional practices, enhancing farmers' confidence and knowledge transfer.

The partnership will further support the State’s inclusive growth agenda through a women-focused agricultural empowerment programme. Under the initiative, the Ministry—working with Contec Global—will roll out Backyard Farming Kits to women across Kwara. Each kit contains seeds of locally relevant food crops, bio-fertilizer, bio-insecticide, bio-stimulant, and an easy-to-follow bilingual guide. Designed to boost household food production and nutrition, the kits will also contribute to economic resilience at the grassroots level. The Ministry has commenced consultations to review the prototypes and finalize the most effective distribution model.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the success of the initiative across all zones of the State. He praised the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for laying the foundation for forward-thinking collaborations that place Kwara at the forefront of green agricultural innovation.

“This partnership represents more than infrastructure—it represents our readiness to unlock new value for farmers, communities, and agribusinesses alike. With this blend of innovation, inclusion, and investment, Kwara is well on course to building a resilient and prosperous agricultural future,” he added. 

On his part, Mr. Abishaek Samuel, Assistant General Manager and Head of Business Development at Contec Global Agro Limited, reiterated the company’s commitment to a long-term relationship with the State.

“Kwara has demonstrated readiness for scalable agricultural innovation. We are proud to contribute our expertise to a partnership that aligns with global sustainability standards and delivers practical benefits to local farmers,” he stated.

The Ministry encourages farmer groups, private investors, and development partners to align with this strategic direction as Kwara advances a new model of organic, homegrown, and inclusive agricultural development under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq, CON.

Kwara Govt Okays Conditional Re-opening of Forest for Sawmilers

The Kwara State Government has officially announced the re-opening of forests in the State for sawmilling and forestry related activities with conditions aimed at preserving the forests as crucial natural resources for generations to come.  The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, as part of the government's position while interacting with officials and key-stakeholders of saw millers, chainsaw operators and plank sellers in the State today.
