WORLD WATER DAY: KWSG REITERATES COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE WATER SUPPLY FOR RESIDENTS

The Kwara State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to ensuring sustainable access to clean and safe drinkable water for all residents in the State as the World marks “World Water Day 2025”. 

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, stated this today, while describing water as “a fundamental human right and a core driver of health, economic growth and environmental sustainability, which is why the State Government is making efforts to ensure availability of water across the State, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) of the United Nations, which focuses on ensuring water and sanitation for all by 2030.”

The Commissioner emphasised that there are ongoing efforts by the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led administration to expand water infrastructure and rehabilitate existing facilities. 

"Testaments to this are the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of waterworks across the State, including the Oyun Waterworks which will service Ijagbo, Offa, and Ajase-Ipo; Omu-Aran Waterworks which serve Omu-Aran town and its environs; Otte/Budo-Egba Waterworks which serve Otte and its environs; and Sobi Waterworks which serve Akerebiata, Shao, Sobi Barracks and its environs", he said.

Hon. Lade stressed that through strategic investments in water supply projects, the State Government has improved access to potable water in urban and rural communities across the State, explaining further that the Western reservoir is operational, supplying water to areas like Adewole, Pakata, Sakele, Anifowoshe, Abe emi, Okekere, Alore, Okelele, Ondoko and their environs, while the FGC tank is serving Ogidi, Oloje, Ode-Alausa, Idi-Ape, Oja-Oba and their environs.

In addition, the Commissioner stated that the Eastern reservoir is actively supplying water to GRA, UITH, and Oke-ose axis, noting that ongoing repairs and maintenance of Waterways will be completed soon, which will ensure availability of water in affected areas such as Flower Garden, Sabo Oke, Maraba, Mubo, Amilengbe, Omoda, Agbaji, Ita Ogunbo and their environs.

Hon. Lade said that the Ministry acknowledged the challenges that remain, specifically in underserved communities and reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to bridging these gaps, while reassuring that the State Government will not relent in its efforts to continue to work with stakeholders and local communities to enhance water accessibility as well as ensure sustainable management of water resources.  

The Commissioner called on all residents to support responsible water use and join hands with the State Government in protecting our water pipes and waterways from vandalisation, saying “together, we can build a State where every household, school and industry will have reliable access to clean water.”
