Kwara SAPZ Ends Sensitisation, Cautions Against Deforestation

Kwara Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ ) Project has concluded community/stakeholders' sensitisation, even as Government cautioned farmers across the state against deforestation to guide against soil infertility.



The State Project Coordinator, Kwara Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) Project, Engr.Dr. Busari Toyin Isiaka,  gave the advice today, in Malete, Moro Local Government Area of the State, while addressing farmers during the just-concluded sensitisation workshop.

 At the workshop, which was organised for Women's Agricultural Cooperatives and Women's Small Medium Enterprises on climate-smart agricultural technologies, the Coordinator lamented the effect of   deforestation on soil structure and agricultural productions.


He observed that if farmers are to ensure maximum productivity and reduced losses, they have to shun acts capable of exposing the soil nutrient to damage.



The Coordinator, who was represented by the Project Livestock Specialist, Mr. Abdullfatah Lekan Ambali, noted that avoidance of deforestation will enhance soil organic matter, thereby  increasing soil health, moisture content and reduce soil temperature.



While advising the participants to embrace adoption of improved farming practice and weather-focused agriculture, he noted that the SAPZ project considers 50% involvement of women and youths in the programme, to achieve its desired goals.



Enlightening participants on the importance of climate-smart agricultural technologies, the Resource Person, Mr. Gbadebo Elebiyo, explained that, aforestation will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, sequestrate carbon and increase yield.



He then recommended planting of cover crops to mitigate direct impact of sun light, rainfall and wind on soil erosion, degradation and leaching.
