Kwara First Lady Calls for Concerted Efforts against Female Genital Mutilation

The Kwara First Lady, Amb. Olufolake AbdulRazaq yesterday in Ilorin called on stakeholders, traditional rulers, corporate bodies and individuals to form a common front against Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) and encouraged Government at all levels to strengthen policies to ensure justice for  victims of FGM.

Amb. Abdulrazaq who spoke through the Chairman, House Committee on Health and Environment, Hon. Rasak Olatunde Owolabi, also sought for support of all residents of the State to ensure that Kwara is free of FGM.

Speaking at an event to mark this year's International Day Against Female Genital Mutilation, the First lady emphasized that all hands must be on deck to surmount the problem, according to her,  "it is my utmost pleasure to stand before you today to request for our collective and dedicated efforts at achieving a Kwara free of FGM.

"FGM is a human rights violation; a public health concern and most importantly, a practice we can and must end together. No female gender must suffer the completely avoidable negative impacts of FGM, which deposits lifelong physical, emotional and psychological scars", she reiterated.

She therefore, stressed the need for relevant stakeholders to Intensify campaigns against FGM and be voices of change across various communities in the State.

Her words, "I stand before you as a mother, a leader and an advocate for change. I call on parents to protect their daughters. I urge traditional and religious leaders to speak out against this harmful practice," she said.

 The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, had earlier in her remarks, emphasized that FGM is a harmful practice with devastating consequences that must be stopped.

She further explained that the event was organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady, to raise awareness about the dangers inherent in FGM.

El-Imam said the present administration under the watch of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating FGM through the enactment of the Kwara State Violence Against Persons Prohibition(VAPP), to checkmate every form of violence against women.

The Commissioner who spoke of the government's resolve to end the scourge,  appealed to traditional rulers and other stakeholders to join the government in the crusade.

Also speaking, the Emir of Shonga, Dr. Haliru Yahaya, praised the government for its efforts at ending the scourge of FGM and assured the Governor of the traditional rulers' readiness to champion the campaign against FGM.

Kwara to employ 1,800 new senior class teachers
