All Development Projects Must Seek Approval, Warns KW-GIS

• Cites stoppage of several projects over regulatory breaches

In a decisive move to uphold urban planning standards, the Kwara State Geographic Information Services (KW-GIS) has reiterated that all construction projects in the state—whether by private individuals, businesses, or government agencies—must obtain proper land use approvals before proceeding.

The agency, which has been actively educating the public through radio enlightenment campaigns, stated that enforcing these regulations is crucial to maintaining safety and development standards.

“This is a basic requirement under the law,” KW-GIS Executive Chairman, ESV Abdulkareem Babatunde Sulyman, said in a statement on Saturday. “When individuals or even government agencies overlook these requirements, it becomes our responsibility to not only halt such projects but also impose appropriate fines.”

Sulyman cited the Pavilion, an urban development project under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, as a recent example. “The project commenced construction without securing the requisite approvals. We have directed work at the site to halt until the necessary permits are obtained,” he said.

The KW-GIS chairman emphasized that the enforcement of development regulations applies uniformly to all government tiers. “This is not a unique case. All government projects, whether local, state, or federal, are required to meet these standards, Development Control activities are clearly outlined in the law. It’s our duty to ensure compliance because if such projects collapse in the future, accountability rests on us.”

Sulyman further noted that several other projects had been sealed for similar violations, including a large-scale development by Peace Pharmaceutical along Asa Dam Bypass and another project by HRA on Lubcon Road.

The KWGIS Executive Chairman explained that the agency has been running enlightenment campaigns on local radio stations to educate developers and the public about the importance of complying with land use regulations.

"We are not just imposing fines; our goal is to ensure lawful, safe, and sustainable urban development in Kwara State," he said.

He concluded by emphasizing the agency's commitment to protecting lives and property through effective urban planning enforcement. “This process is non-negotiable. Ensuring that all projects meet the required standards is a critical step toward building a safe, sustainable, and organized urban landscape.”

Kwara to employ 1,800 new senior class teachers
