PRACTICAL MEAL PLANNING IS KEY TO ACHIEVING ADEQUATE DIET - Gene
The Nutrition Desk Officer, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Jemila Adamu Gene has described meal planning as a good measure to achieve adequate diet as well as maintain healthy living.
While speaking on another episode of "Adequate Diet and Healthy Living" on Radio Kwara, Apata Yakuba, Ilorin, Mrs. Gene added that meal planning is very essential for preparation, as it allows intake of appropriate nutrients to achieve an adequate diet.
The Nutrition Desk Officer explained that appropriate planning increases the ease of sourcing for the right food content, adding that it helps us to eat what we want and not what we have.
"It is essential to plan so as not to fail because our meals require appropriate planning as it helps us to decide healthy food choices, saves time and at the same time avoid wastage.”
“Draft out a well composed food timetable with adequate nutrients for at least one week which can be rolled over and endeavour to buy in bulk in order to save money", she added.
Mrs. Gene further advised residents to explore other regional foods and not limit themselves to our local foods alone because other sources of nutrients will be discovered apart from the routine food intake.
In her conclusion, she mentioned the components of a meal that can be described as an adequate diet namely: grains, legumes, groundnut, fruits and vegetables, proteins, oil, while stressing on adequate intake of water, as it is very essential for all food processes.
