L-PRES Project: KWSG Trains 700 Extension Agents, Farmers On Small Ruminants, Feeds Production

The Kwara State Government through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), in collaboration with the World Bank and the Centre for Dryland Agriculture has completed the training of 700 extension agents and farmers towards ensuring food security in the State.

Speaking during the weeklong capacity training programme on small ruminants production and crop residue processing for improved utilisation by ruminants, packaged by the Synergy Impact Consultants at the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanisation (NCAM), Ilorin, Kwara State. The State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq who was represented by his Senior Adviser and Counsellor, Alhaji Saadudeen Salahudeen, said that the extension agents and farmers were capable of making positive impacts on the lives of Kwarans.

The Governor’s aide said the participants were drawn from different backgrounds and classes, such as livestock and crop farmers, retired civil servants, and youths from rural communities, and expected to chart a new path in the State’s agro-economy.

He enthused that the participants were expected to contribute their quota individually and collectively to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s commitment to ensuring food security and sufficiency in Kwara State.

Alhaji Salahudeen said the State government was delighted at the impact of the activities of L-PRES in partnership with the State government to turn the agricultural sector around, adding that the participants were out for wealth creation.

“One of the current challenges of the country is the high level of unemployment. And the solution is no longer white-collar jobs. It’s about entrepreneurship. You’re out to be multi-billionaire entrepreneurs if each of you makes the best of the skills you’ve acquired because the market is there,” he said.

The Special Adviser disclosed that food security has been promoted by the State Governor, reiterating the determination of the government at all levels to improve the livestock sector of agriculture, which the training has manifested.

He disclosed the Governor has invested in the provision of inputs to not less than 600,000 small holder farmers and procured, delivered, and handed over tractors to each of the 16 local government areas in the State, as opposed to the absence before now. 

Also speaking, the newly appointed Chairman of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA), Alhaji Abdullateef Alakawa, commended the State Governor for the foresight in making agriculture paramount on his agenda.

Alakawa also disclosed that the future of Nigeria is agriculture and agribusiness, saying, “this era is that of the knowledge economy, and you are the people that will pass the knowledge across to the right quarters.”

Also speaking, a Non-Executive Director of the NNPC, Dr Ghali Alaaya, Special Adviser On Special Duty, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Jiddah, Senior Special Assistant on Religion, Alhaji Dan Maigoro, and Special Adviser on Communications, Alhaji Bashir Adigun, commended the State government for the process of selecting the participants, adding that the training programme would fastrack the realisation of government plans on food security.

Kwara State Government has sounded serious warnings to proprietors of coaching centers across the state, to henceforth desist from lifting students from various schools, under the pretext of preparing them for Seniors Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE)or be ready to face the full wrath of law.
