KWSG Pledges Support for Farmers

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting all categories of farmers in the State, emphasizing its dedication to enhancing food security and promoting agricultural development.


His Excellency, the Governor of Kwara State, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, gave the assurance during the Annual Pork Festival organized by the Pig Farmers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), Kwara State Chapter.


Speaking at the event, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi highlighted the government’s numerous initiatives aimed at supporting livestock farmers. She disclosed that the government is committed to assisting the association in achieving its goals, including the establishment of a pig village, processing facilities, and a cold room to enhance the productivity and sustainability of pig farming in the State.


While commending the association for their dedication to the development of the pig farming industry, the Commissioner assured members of the government’s continued support and greater presence in the coming year. She also announced that the State government was collaborating with PFAN on training and capacity development programmes in 2025, specifically targeting youths, retirees, and civil servants about to retire.


In his remarks, Mr. Lekan Oyedepo, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of PFAN, commended the Kwara State Government for its proactive support. He noted the government’s provision of 900 bags of maize as palliative support to ease the burden of high feed costs on pig farmers in 2023.


Mr. Lekan also emphasized the global demand for pork, describing it as a lean and widely consumed red meat, accounting for 26% of all meat consumed worldwide and surpassing poultry and beef in demand. He further explained that in 2023, the pig farming industry in Kwara State recorded an impressive annual turnover of approximately ₦600 million, with 126 registered farmers contributing to this success.


Despite these achievements, Mr. Lekan highlighted that feed costs constitute nearly 75% of the industry's annual expenses, underlining the need for strategic interventions to improve sustainability and profitability.


The President of PFAN Kwara, Mr. Kash Owolabi, expressed his gratitude to the State government for its ongoing support. He also commended the association’s Grand Patron, Architect Oladosu Adekeye, for his steadfast guidance and encouragement in advancing the goals of the organization.He  reassured members of continued support, Including engagement with the diaspora for investment. 


As the Kwara State Government continues to roll out initiatives aimed at supporting farmers, it remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering an enabling environment for agricultural growth and sustainability in the State.

KWASRRA COMMENCES LOCAL GOVERNMENT RESIDENTS REGISTRATION

The Kwara State Residents Registration Agency has commenced registration for the staff of Local Government Areas and farmers across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara State. The second phase of the registration exercise is focused on the registration of the members of Staff of the Local Government Areas (LGA), Local Government Education Authority ( LGEA), Teaching Service Commission ( TESCOM) and farmers across the State.
