Kwara to Vaccinate Livestock Against Anthrax

The Kwara State Government is set to begin a State-wide vaccination against  anthrax disease among livestock in Kwara.


The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, made this declaration during a stakeholders' engagement meeting organized by the Kwara State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRESS). She reaffirmed the State unwavering commitment to supporting the livestock sector while promoting the health and well-being of  citizens of Kwara.


In her remarks, the  Commissioner commended Governor AbdulRazaq for partnering with L-PRESS, a World Bank-supported initiative designed to improve productivity, commercialization, and resilience of the livestock sector in the State. She highlighted the Governor's visionary approach and dedication to fostering sustainable agricultural development in the State.


Mrs. Thomas revealed that earlier this year, the L-PRESS Project had procured 330,400 doses of Anthrax vaccines for Kwara State with logistics support to facilitate the smooth implementation of the vaccination exercise.


According to her, the vital initiative underscored the government's commitment to safeguarding the health of both livestock and citizens in Kwara State.


The Commissioner further appealed to all stakeholders in attendance to ensure the success of the exercise through active collaboration and community engagement. 


She reiterated the government's determination to strengthen the livestock sector and improve public health across the State.

On her part, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Funke Sokoya said the Kwara State Government was resolute at duly protecting the livelihoods of farmers and promoting healthier lives for residents of the State.


She added that the success of the upcoming State-Wide vaccination exercise would be determined by the amount of support received from all stakeholders at the meeting, urging them to continue sensitizing their people at the grassroot level.


In his welcome address, the State Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye said the stakeholders engagement was imperative in order to have a smooth and successful vaccination exercise in the State, reiterating that their contributions would go a long way in achieving the State's objectives.


Speaking on behalf of  other stakeholders, the Ardo of Fulani in Kwara State, Alhaji Adamu Mahmud Ojo-nla lauded the State government, L-PRES Project, and other development partners for their efforts towards rejuvenating the livestock sector of the State and assured the State government of all the stakeholders support towards a successful vaccination exercise.


The main highlight of the event was the presentation by the Project Animal Health Officer, Dr. Bukola Richards on how to prevent anthrax, the symptoms, and the impact of anthrax to the economy of the State, among other topical issues.


Anthrax is a rare but serious illness caused by a spore-forming bacterium, Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax mainly affects livestock and wild game. Humans can become infected through direct or indirect contact with sick animals.


Prominent community leaders at the meeting included; the State Chairman of Maiyeti Allah, Alhaji Idris Abubakar; Head of Fulani in Kwara State, Alhaji Adamu Mahmud Ojo-nla; State Chairman of Joworos, Alhaji Tijani Usman. Others were the Special Assistant to the Governor on Fulani Matters, Hon. Abdullahi Muhammed; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Herdsmen, Hajiyya Aishat Yusuf; State Chairman of Private Veterinary Services, Dr. Sambo Yoksa, among others.

KWASRRA COMMENCES LOCAL GOVERNMENT RESIDENTS REGISTRATION

The Kwara State Residents Registration Agency has commenced registration for the staff of Local Government Areas and farmers across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara State. The second phase of the registration exercise is focused on the registration of the members of Staff of the Local Government Areas (LGA), Local Government Education Authority ( LGEA), Teaching Service Commission ( TESCOM) and farmers across the State.
