KWSG Begins Vaccination Of Livestock Against Anthrax in Kwara North, Central

The Kwara State Government has commenced the vaccination of livestock against anthrax disease in Kwara North and Kwara Central Senatorial District of the State.The exercise followed the official flag-off  by the State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in Lamba, Asa Local Government Area of the State.


The team, comprised of Veterinary Doctors from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Health Technologists, Private Veterinary Doctors, Statisticians from the Bureau of Statistics and Security Officers from the Directorate of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was led by the Animal Health Officer of Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Dr. Bukola Richards. The exercise Kick-started in Baruten Local Government, with a courtesy visit to the Emir of Okuta, Dr. Abubakar Sero Idris who also doubles as the Chairman, Traditional Council of the Local Government, where she intimated the Monarch on the significance of the anthrax vaccination in preventing animals from contacting the contagious "zoonotic" disease and safeguarding public health in the State.

Dr. Richards described anthrax as an infectious disease caused by exposure to bacillus anthracis bacteria, adding that the disease is very fatal and could be devastating to both public health and the economy of the State due to the zoonotic nature of the disease.


She appreciated the L-PRES Project, State Government, and Local Government authorities for providing logistics and other support to carry-out a hitch-free exercise across the State. She also solicited for the cooperation of livestock owner's with a view to having a successful vaccination exercise.


While receiving the team in his Palace, the Emir of Okuta, Dr. Abubakar Sero Idris thanked His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for making the development of Kwara North his priority, since the inception of his tenure, according to the Monarch "this is a good gesture by the Governor to ensure that everybody feels the impact of government, and this initiative will have a long positive impact on the lives of Fulani herders and livestock farmers in the community."

The Emir, who is the Chairman, Traditional Council of Baruten Local Government, assured the State government of the support of his community for a successful exercise.


The team was also received by the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar; Emir of Ilesha Baruba, Prof. Halidu Abubakar; Emir of Gwanara, Alhaji Sabi Idris; Emir of Yashikira, Alhaji Usman Sariki and the District Head of Kosu-bosu, Alhaji Ibrahim Suleiman Sinawenragi ll.The team also paid a courtesy call  to the Member representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Senator Suleiman Sodiq Umar in Kaiama, Kaiama Local Government.

It would be recalled that the Kwara State Government had earlier received 330,400 doses of anthrax vaccines from the federal government through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) to prevent livestock from contacting anthrax bacteria as well as safeguarding the public health of the State.
