NUTRITION: KWARA ENCOURAGES INCORPORATION OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IN DIETS
The Nutrition Desk Officer, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Jemila Adamu Gene with the Presenter, Kehinde Adeshina, during the Live Broadcast on Adequate Nutrition and Healthy Living at the Kwara State Television.
In a bid to sensitize the public on Nutrition and the Consequences of Malnutrition, the Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Communications, has made a clarion call to residents to incorporate fruits and green leafy vegetables in their diets to boost their immune system.
Speaking on the weekly programme titled ‘Adequate Nutrition and Healthy Living’ yesterday on Kwara Television, the Nutrition Desk Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Jemila Adamu Gene, discussed the topic: ‘Seasonal Vegetables and Fruits to Boost the Immune System’ and exposed the listeners to different seasonal fruits and green leafy vegetables and their benefits.
According to her 'The immune system is the body defense mechanism against infections. A well built immune system helps to heal wound faster. Malnourished children suffer from lower immunity'.
Mrs. Gene highlighted different seasonal fruits and vegetables that are highly rich in vitamins, taking the listeners through numerous local recipes and the simple way of preparing green leafy vegetables such as Ewedu, Spinach, Luru as well as fruits salads - mixing two or more fruits to make juice, etc.
Speaking on the benefits of adding fruits and vegetables to diets, she said they help to boost the immune system, fight infections, keep the skin bright, build strong bones and teeth, admonishing listeners to eat in moderation to avoid constipation, heart burn and diarrhea.
The Nutrition Desk Officer opined that eating readily available and accessible vegetables and fruits help local farmers and boost the economy, advising parents to add fruits and vegetables to children's diets, while adults are to reduce the intake of sugar, salt and alcohol as well as have adequate sleep and exercise regularly to boost the immune system.
