GENE ADVISES LOCAL FARMERS TO GROW NUTRIENT-DENSE CROPS
The Nutrition Desk Officer, State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ilorin, Mrs. Jemila Adamu Gene, has advised Local Farmers to focus on cultivating nutrient-dense crops as a means of combating malnutrition in the State.
Mrs. Gene stated this yesterday during an insightful Midland 99.1 FM nutrition programme, which is sponsored by the Kwara State Ministry of Communications.
The Nutrition Desk Officer emphasized that no single food can provide all the essential nutrients the body requires, encouraging farmers to diversify their crops as well as consider small-scale animal rearing such as rabbit farming, which is relatively easy to rear and offer high-quality protein, which can enhance the nutritional status of households.
For listeners looking to improve their meals, Mrs. Gene shared practical cooking advice such as preparing potatoes with crayfish to boost protein and mineral content and highlighted the nutritional benefits of local ingredients like baobab leaves (locally known as luru), isapa (a leafy vegetable), locust beans and soybeans, noting that these foods are rich in essential vitamins and minerals, which should be incorporated into daily meals.
To further support food security and nutrition, the Nutrition Desk Officer encouraged listeners to start home gardens, adding that home gardening can reduce food costs and enhance family well-being.
“Growing your own vegetables and herbs, even in small spaces, can provide fresh, nutrient-rich foods right at your doorstep”, Mrs. Gene said.
