KWSG Takes Flood Sensitization Campaign to Riverine Communities

In its continued efforts to sensitize the public on the challenges associated with annual flooding, the Kwara State Government has taken its sensitization campaign to the riverine communities, urging residents to take appropriate preventive measures. 

The State Commissioner for Communications, Hon. Bolanle Olukoju led the sensitization team to the Palaces of the Etsu Patigi, Alh. Ibrahim Umar, Bologi II, and the Emir of Lafiagi, Alh. Mohammed Kudu Kawu to inform them about the government’s flood awareness drive.

Hon. Olukoju, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Yahaya Mohammed, highlighted the importance of the visit, noting that it was part of the state government's strategy to sensitize the public on the dangers of flooding, particularly those living along the river banks and areas prone to flooding.

According to her, the sensitization campaign had earlier been launched in Ilorin, where motor park operators, market leaders, and commercial transport workers were engaged.

The Commissioner, who commended the traditional rulers for their hospitality, urged them to help spread the message to their subjects within their communities, emphasizing the government's commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

In his remarks, the Etsu Patigi, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, Bologi II, commended the state government for its continuous support to flood-affected areas and advocated a permanent solution through dredging of the River Niger to tackle the recurring problem. 

He also appreciated the government's donation of 10 units of 2-bedroom flats to the Patigi Emirate Council for flood victims, adding that a contractor had already visited the site for a significant construction project.

The monarch further requested the state government's assistance in equipping the completed proposed community radio station in Patigi to enhance effective communication in the Emirate.

In a related development, the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Mohammed Kudu Kawu, lauded the government's efforts and called for collaboration with the Federal government and the private sector to find a lasting solution to the problem of flooding in the riverine communities.

The two prominent Traditional Rulers reaffirmed their support for the state government and its efforts in assisting their communities, particularly during this trying period of flooding.

The team later visited some of the affected communities whose houses were submerged in water in Patigi and Lafiagi communities, Patigi, and Edu Local Government Areas.
