KWEPA Seals Off Houses Over Lack of Toilets

In a bid to enforce environmental health laws and prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed off five houses on Talubi Street, Eruda area in Ilorin, for non-compliance with environmental regulations.

The Agency's Acting General Manager, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho Adeola, led the enforcement team and explained that the action was necessitated by the occupants persistent disregard for environmental health laws. "Every house must have toilet facilities to prevent open defecation, which poses serious health risks to the general public," she emphasized.

According to Hajia Folorunsho, the offenders had previously received an abatement notice and signed a letter of undertaking to address the nuisance but failed to comply. "This flagrant disregard for the law left us with no option but to seal off the properties," she stated.

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency is empowered by law to sanction or take legal action against individuals, organizations, or premises that disobey environmental health laws. Hajia Folorunsho warned that the agency would continue to enforce these laws to protect public health and safety.

Also, she appealed to residents to cooperate with environmental health officers in carrying out their duties and ensure every house has functional toilet facilities. "We urge property owners and occupants to take responsibility for maintaining good sanitation and hygiene practices, she advised.

The Agency's enforcement action is part of efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment in Kwara State. Residents are encouraged to report instances of environmental neglect or concerns to the agency.
