Flood Alert: Kwara State Government Steps Up Measures to Safeguard Residents

In view of the potential risks posed by heavy rainfall and the planned release of water from Lagdo Dam, the Kwara State Government hereby urges residents to take necessary precautions to protect lives and property, to avoid mishaps.

 This was contained in a statement issued today, by the State Commissioner for Communications, Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, in her office.

According to the statement; "the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued warnings, for residents in flood prone areas in particular, to prepare for urban flooding in major cities, due to the expected heavy downpours. Strong winds and thunderstorms are also predicted, which may exacerbate the situation."

According to the statement which further highlights NiMet's forecast that "localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of Niger and Kwara States, especially during the morning hours."

In light of the above, the Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Communications' Department of Public Orientation, has launched a series of awareness campaigns, to inform the public of the potential dangers, with a view to take necessary safety measures. These include:

- Broadcast jingles across media platforms( online and offline)to educate residents about the risks of flooding.

- Conducting sensitization visits to market places, motor parks and palaces of the affected communities, to disseminate information on preventive actions.


In the same vein, residents living in riverine areas are strongly advised to relocate to the temporary shelter provided by the State government, as the impending release of water from dams could significantly increase the risk of flooding in these regions.

The State Government has also put emergency response measures in place, working closely with relevant agencies, to ensure timely assistance for affected communities.

Residents are hereby advised to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions and prioritize their safety during this period of heightened risk.

The Kwara State Government today charged Traditional Medicine Practitioners to always maintain Standard practices, to enhance a healthy society, for the benefits of all.
