FMA Trains 22 Extension Agents On Profitable Agric Practices

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, through the Department of Agricultural Extension Services, in collaboration with the Kwara State Government, has trained 22 extension agents on profitable agricultural practices.

The training, which was organized by Small Holders Horticulture Empowerment Project (SHEP), is part of the government's drive at ensuring food security in the state.

Declaring the workshop open in Ilorin, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Oloruntoyosi Thomas said the administration of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is passionate about the well-being of kwarans and fully committed to the agricultural sector.

She disclosed that the state government had invested heavily in agriculture and extension services, expressing satisfaction on the performance of all the departments in the Ministry. 

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to the Kwara Agricultural Development Project (KWADP), emphasizing the importance of extension agents in the agricultural value chain and the state government's commitment to rewarding them.

Mrs. Thomas emphasized that the state government is aware of the need to recruit more extension agents due to the expansion in the agricultural activities in the state.

"The Kwara State Government will start to recruit at least 300 extension agents for the wet season farming, if they are not incorporated into the system as full staff, they will be taken in for now as casual staff", the Commissioner stated.

In her remarks, the Managing Director, KWADP, Dr. Khadijat Ahmed said the SHEP project has been useful to farmers at the grassroots by helping them to increase their profits through the identification of market needs.

She added that the programme would improve food security in the state and assist farmers to maximize profits.

Earlier, the SHEP Project Master Trainer, Dr. Wale Kayode had explained that SHEP is a market oriented project aimed at changing the orientation of the farmers from "grow and sell, to grow to sell", implying that the programme would enable the farmers to have ready made markets before production.
